Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) company that has raised billions from technology giants like Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google and Amazon (AMZN), released the most advanced version of its Claude chatbot Thursday.
The company said the newest model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, performs at a level on par or better than the newest versions of other AI chatbots like ChatGPT from Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI and Google Gemini across a number of different categories and benchmarks, and is twice as fast as previous Claude models.
Sonnet Is First Launch in Claude 3.5 Family of Models
Sonnet is the name given to Anthropic’s middle-tier Claude model, along with the lower-end Haiku and higher-end Opus. The company said the 3.5 Sonnet version of Claude is available starting Thursday in its iOS app and online, and said it plans to launch the newer versions of Haiku and Opus later this year.
“Claude 3.5 Sonnet sets new industry benchmarks for graduate-level reasoning (GPQA), undergraduate-level knowledge (MMLU), and coding proficiency (HumanEval),” the company said. “It shows marked improvement in grasping nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is exceptional at writing high-quality content with a natural, relatable tone.”
The company also said it is adding a new feature to Claude called Artifacts, allowing users to open things like code or images Claude creates in a window adjacent to the conversation with the chatbot, allowing users to give more detailed feedback and see instant changes.
Anthropic Says Update Provides ‘Collaborative’ AI
Anthropic said the update “marks Claude’s evolution from a conversational AI to a collaborative work environment.”
The Claude 3 models were released in March, and Anthropic’s business-focused offering Claude Teams was released last month as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms (META) have raced to continue developing more capable AI models and products that can generate revenue.
