Lululemon Says ‘Wellbeing Burnout’ Is a Thing

The pursuit of wellbeing is making people feel unwell.

That’s according to Lululemon Athletica’s (LULU) annual Global Wellbeing Report, which found that nearly two-thirds of survey respondents “are struggling with this growing societal demand to support their wellbeing in specific ways.”

Almost half of respondents say they’ve experienced what the company calls “wellbeing burnout.” Respondents cited things like “overwhelming societal expectations,” conflicting information about improving wellbeing, and loneliness as sources of stress.

Lululemon Says ‘Moving With Others’ a Remedy

According to the activewear company, a remedy for wellbeing burnout is “moving with others,” noting that respondents who say they “use physical activity as an opportunity to socialize with others report 23% higher wellbeing.” (Lululemon offers group fitness classes, naturally.)

Shares of Lululemon are down nearly 50% in 2024. Last month, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Calvin McDonald said the company has a “newness” problem, admitting that customers had hoped to see more seasonal updates to “color, print, patterns and silhouettes.”

The online wellbeing survey involved 16,000 total respondents last spring across 15 markets where Lulelemon operates.
